Biography

An active licensed lawyer, Professor Volkart is an SSU Distinguished Alumna Award recipient who has returned to campus after a full legal career to teach part-time.As a civil litigator, her practice focused on fraud and RICO cases, collaborating with U.S. Attorneys to prosecute those involved in criminal enterprises. A life-long ACLU member, she chaired the Sonoma County chapter, chaired its Police Practices Committee, testified at U.S. Civil Rights Commission hearings on police - community relations, served on the Northern California ACLU Board and is the recipient of its Lola Hanzel Courageous Advocacy Award. While studying law, she externed on the Criminal Panel of the California Supreme Court, writing weekly memos to the Justices recommending which appeals deserved to be heard. Back on campus, she has served as a founding advisory board member of the Center for Law, Ethics and Society and is a current member of the technical working group on community policing. She has also taught business law and ethics courses at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and currently also teaches in SSU’s Master’s of Public Administration Program and serves as the University’s campus-wide Pre-Law Advisor. Her passion is supporting SSU students to achieve their professional, educational, and community-focused goals.
