We encourage our students to dream big and aim high -- to always shoot for the stars. Sonoma State University, the School of Social Sciences, and the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies regularly recognize the sterling academic achievements by our students with the following awards:
Graduation Honors
The university awards graduation honors to graduates who have SSU and cumulative GPA of not less than 3.50 and have completed at least 45 letter-graded units in residence.
- Cum Laude is awarded to those students achieving SSU and cumulative GPA of not less than 3.50.
- Magna Cum Laude is awarded to those students achieving SSU and cumulative GPA of not less than 3.75.
- Summa Cum Laude is awarded to those students achieving SSU and cumulative GPA of not less than 3.90.
For the purpose of the commencement ceremony program, the Office of the Registrar will use the units and GPA from your last graded semester. Actual graduation honors will be recalculated at the end of your final semester and will appear on your transcript and diploma.
With Distinction
The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies awards With Distinction honor to graduating CCJS majors who have exhibited academic excellence and outstanding service to the department, the university, or the community. Full-time CCJS faculty members review the records of all graduating CCJS majors and select the students who deserve to receive the honor from the department. With Distinction honor will appear on the commencement ceremony program, your transcript, and diploma.
Dean's List
The School of Social Sciences issues a Dean's List every semester to recognize the academic achievements of undergraduate social science students who obtained a GPA of 3.50 or higher in 12 or more graded units within the term.
