Biography
Dr. Asencio received her BA (Sociology/Law and Society), MA (Sociology), and PhD (Sociology) from the University of California, Riverside. She joined the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies at Sonoma State University in Fall 2014. Her primary research area is the relationship between social psychological identity and criminal outcomes. Dr. Asencio’s current research focuses specifically on identity development during adolescence, and how this relates to interaction with the criminal justice system to influence delinquent and criminal outcomes. Dr. Asencio’s past work has been published in Social Psychology Quarterly, Sociological Perspectives, and Social Forces among others.
